Lady Captain's Dinner 2006

Despite gale force wind and driving rain, 60 intrepid Dublin City Golf Club Lady Members made their way to the club house on Saturday, 2nd. December, to celebrate Lady Captain Theresa Walsh’s last blast of the year . The annual Captain’s Christmas Party was taking place and the waft of mulled wine lulled the senses in the bar. Inside the scene was a winter wonderland of twinkling lights, sequined dresses and sparkly eyes!  A few ‘podge and rodges’ lingered at the bar but were quickly shooed away!

In the background, Christmas crooners hummed seasonal tunes but were well drowned out by the cacophony of happy ladies, contemplating an enjoyable evening ahead.  The ladies were dressed to kill………… from the dusky pink outfit worn by the Lady Captain to the red satin number sported by Leonie, to the slinky sequins  sported by Esme alongside that amazing check top so well worn by Muriel  - Christian Dior eat your heart out! Who says lady golfers wear the trousers!

The evening was orchestrated with panache from the very start.  Table plans were posted and members were randomly mixed to introduce new members to older members.   Peggy Mooney’s artistry with flowers was evident in the centrepieces on each table and each lady received a card holder for marking cards as a little gift from Theresa.

The lights were turned down as the food was served and ladies enjoyed delicious seafood, soup, salmon and chicken followed by dessert or cheese, courtesy of Jackie and her crew.  The wine flowed and the conversation flowed and anyone looking in the window from outside would have seen sixty gorgeous golfing girls of all ages celebrating a great year and the start to the Christmas season.

Peggy Mooney congratulated Theresa on a wonderful year as Lady Captain, remarking on her organisationalTheresa and Peggy skills and a wonderfully relaxed attitude to the role.   The Lady Captain’s final speech reflected on the year past and also on the impact the captaincy on her personally, her family and her outlook on life in general.  She decided that it was worth it all and toasted all present with a gigantic litre sized glass of wine.

The night was special for Peggy Mooney who was presented with her 2007 Lady Captain’s jacket, which in her own words’ has to be cut down to size’! Peggy announced her choice of Lady Captain for 2008 - Deirdre Kelly obviously a very popular choice judging by the applause from the ladies.

Good behaviour  was then abandoned as the music commenced. ‘Song for Theresa’ a.k.a Mona Lisa was warbled by Tricia, Della, Ann, Niamh and Elaine.  The first line ran – Only Theresa, Only Theresa, you were made for here…… and went downhill after that!  Leonie and Tricia cranked up the tempo and very soon ladies began to trip the light fantastic on the dance floor (see website for the photo’s). Balloons played a very big part in the night with several novel uses being employed for them. .Finally, a spot of table dancing wound up the evening with Leonie and Jackie demonstrating their Riverdance skills.

10 out of 10 – Congraturlations - a great night was had by all. Dublin City Lady Golfers - magnificent!
