Placing and dropping a ball.
Do you know how to drop a ball or place it properly. ?
Here is a very brief summary of R&A Rule 20.
When placing or taking a drop under the rules you must do the following :
Placing.
1. Mark the ball with a tee peg or similar.
2. Lift and clean.
3. Replace within 6 inches not nearer the hole.
4. Once placed the ball is in play and cannot be replaced a 2nd time (if it subsequently moves).
Penalties apply for non compliance with 1, 3 & 4 above

Dropping a ball without penalty

1. You must mark the ball or spot from which the relief is being taken.
2. The ball when dropped must strike the course within the one club length allowed.
3. Once dropped, the ball is in play and cannot be re-dropped a second time if it subsequently moves or you don’t like the lie except (4 below).
4. If the ball is nearer the hole or rolls more than 2 further club lengths beyond the one club length allowed it must be re-dropped. (Also if the ball rolls into a hazard or on to the putting green)
5. If after dropping twice, the ball has not finished within the area allowed, it may be placed at the point where it last struck the course (i.e where the ball struck the course on the 2nd drop provided that point is in accordance with 2 above).

Please refer to the R&A rules (Rule 20) for full details.
