Ladies July Newsletter

AA Insurance Interclub Competitions115_AA Logo_JPG

Congratulations to our Junior and Senior Foursomes teams who have won all their matches to date.   The Junior Foursomes are now through to the Lenister semi final having seen off challenges from many teams, most recently Foxrock and Headfort.  They face local club Hazel Grove in the next round.  The match dates have yet to be announced but must be played by 15th August.

The Senior Foursomes gave a wonderful performance in Black Bush on Sunday 11th July and not only qualified for the next round but came top of the group of 8 teams who qualified in Black Bush Golf Club.  The next round will be played on Saturday 21st August in Baltray  with the final played the following day on Sunday, 22nd August.  It promises to be a very exciting weekend for Dublin City.  We hope that as many ladies as possible will travel to Baltray to support the team.

The Junior and Senior Foursomes teams are the only remaining Dublin City teams in the AA Insurance Interclub competitions.  Our Challenge Cup team played their hearts out on 28th June in Carrickmines but were narrowly beaten by South County. Well done girls for putting up such a great fight on the day.

Our Miele team were very disappointed but philosophical when they recently lost to a very tough team from Slade Valley. While matching the focus, skill and determination of their opponents Lady Luck was not on our girls side and they lost by just one hole!

All our teams in the various categories showed great team spirit, competitiveness and determination to win.  We are all proud of them.  The managers of all the teams deserve our thanks for their work as liaison officers, organisers, mentors, advisers etc.

 Club Match Plays

The next round of club match plays will finish on Sunday, August 15th and you are asked to please have your matches played by that date.  If you are not available to play your match by the deadline please give your opponent a walkover.  If the match is not played by 15th August and there is no agreement to give a walkover, a coin will have to be tossed to decide whether you or your opponent goes through to the next round.

The entry fee to all match plays was €5. Some ladies forgot to pay!  Would you kindly examine your conscience and if you haven’t paid would you do so as soon as you can.

The Raffle

The recent raffle for the Ladies raised €1260.  This was a magnificent response from all involved.  Thanks to all of you who bought tickets.

The fundraising committee deserve a special word of thanks: (Evelyn O’Sullivan, Karen O’Donnell, Pauline Scully, Leonie Colgan and Peggy Mooney) They worked very hard to make it a success. They   went out and sourced the prizes and sponsorships. They also lost no opportunity to sell tickets!

A sincere word of thanks is due to the generosity of those who contributed the many attractive prizes.

The Lady Captain’s CharitydroppedImage

There was a very generous response to the appeal on June 12th (Lady Captain’s Prize Day 2). €685 was donated for the Capuchin Day Centre for Homeless People.  I would like to thank everyone who gave so generously. A cheque for this amount was posted to the Director of the Centre, Brother Kevin Crowley.

The Rules Nightranda_rules-of-golf-2008frontcover-reduced

About 30 ladies (and one gentleman) attended the “Rules of Golf” talk on Tuesday, 29th June.

A very interesting informative talk was given by Anne O’Sullivan, an ILGU rules official.  The weekend prior to giving the talk she walked the course with our handicap secretary, Esme Murphy to familiarise herself with the areas where players usually get into difficulty (such as the 2nd and 6th hole). Often players are unsure of the rules and how to apply them. A number of ladies submitted questions beforehand.  In a very informative talk laced with witty comments and using pictorial demonstrations, Anne explained the rules of golf as they apply to the various trouble spots on our own course and answered all the questions submitted beforehand.

Everyone agreed it was a very worthwhile evening and we should consider having another “rules night” in the next twelve months. Hopefully Anne will be available.

I would like to thank our handicap secretary Esme for organising the evening.  A lot of thought, effort, and preparation beforehand ensured the evenings success.

Junior Golf

In June a group of enthusiastic young ladies were introduced to golf in Dublin City by Brigid and Bernard Jones. Over four weeks they were given basic coaching and shown the rudiments of the game.  The girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  At the final session they played a nine hole fun competition with some experienced players and had a small prize giving afterwards and a meal.

Great credit is due to Brigid and Bernard who organised the sessions, the coaching and took responsibility for the girls while they played in Dublin City. Thanks are also due to Tricia Nolan who assisted with the coaching and supervision of the girls. Thanks also to the ladies who gave their time to play with the girls on the final fun competition: Pauline Scully, Deirdre Kelly, Winnie Neary and Geraldine Moore.

Encouraging young players is the way forward for the game and young girls are the future of the ladies section of the club.  Let’s hope that there will be a follow up and that young players will find support and encouragement in Dublin City Golf Club.

Finally...

I would like to thank everyone for their support and participation so far this year.  It is great to see so many out playing every week.  Let us hope that the lovely sunny weather that we had in June and made Lady Captain’s Day and the Ladies Open so pleasant willthankyou return for the remainder of the summer.

I would like to congratulate the medal winners for the months April to July: Geraldine Moore, Ruth Kelly, Rebecca McRory and Carol Loftus.  This is the first time for all of them to win a medal playing in Dublin City.  Well done girls.

Don’t forget you can always find a playing partner by coming along on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Check the website for the tee times which will be “reserved” by members of the committee (Ann Kelly, Mary O’Hanlon, Margaret Marren, Esme Murphy, Sheila Stone, Pauline Scully and Angela O’Donoghue).

You can also play on Thursday evening.  Just turn up at 5.30 for the nine hole competition.

I also would like to encourage the players who joined in the last twelve months to meet each other and go out and practice their golf. I propose to hold a new members evening the weekend of 4th /5th September when all ladies who joined in the last year can come along and meet each other.    Experienced players will be welcome to give advice and support to the newcomers and take them out for a game. Details will be available soon – Lady Captain Ann
