INTER-CLUB MANAGER SELECTIONS

Just a quick note to our members with regards to Inter-club manager selections, I wish to be open and transparent with my appointments.

Firstly we have 13 competitions this year and did not get a full response to my advertisements for managers, however I did get some and I gave these priority.

They were as follows:

Rob Falconer (Barton Cup and Jimmy Bruen) same panel of players;
Colin McInerney (Junior Cup) knows the players in his panel;
John McCarthy Jnr (Irish Mix) an experienced Interclub player;
Joe Griffin (Metro Cup) an active and experienced member;
Paddy McMahon and Bob Ockenden - both together in Leinster Fourball and Best Cup as these are two experienced and active members that I put both together as these are high commitment competitions.

These were the only people to apply for managerial positions. After the people mentioned above, I had to ask others to manage.  Most were unable but I was able to talk around John Curran (J. B. Carr) a very experienced and active member.  Ciaran Blaney (Jimmy Carroll) a willing and active member, Gary Byrne (Lisheen Cup) winner of two Lisheen Cups as manager and Derek Fitzpatrick (Pierce Purcell) a willing and active member.

Even after these I was left two short and this is where myself (Duggan Cup) and Tony Carton (Old Conna) came in.

I hope this explains where my appointments have come from.  It was also difficult to appoint managers as members did not wish to manage a team they could play for.

I wish to thank all the managers for their time and commitment for the season ahead and hope they get all the support of our club and members.

Inter-Club Competitions 2011 - Men

Dear Member

Firstly, can I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy New Year and I hope you all had a good Christmas.

Well the New Year brings the new season of inter club golf and it is with this that I write to you all.  Last year saw our ladies’ teams build on the success of 2009 and bring yet more pennants to the club, well done again ladies!  It’s this lead that I hope the changes we make, which I will explain later on, we the men will follow.  Playing for your club at inter club level is great fun and a competitive way to play golf and build up team spirit and friendships with other members.  We hope by putting in a fresh inter club set up this year we will achieve the following:

1.      From now on all team managers will be non-playing managers and so be available on the course on the day of match to encourage and support the players.

2.      Selection for all teams will be based on a club criteria of;

         a)   recent club scores

         b)   practice round scores

         c)    combinations

         d)   overall playing history.

As golf is a game of form we feel selecting should reflect this and hope if we are open and transparent in our selections, it will encourage all members to make themselves available as we need as big a pool of players as possible to choose from as we are a small club.

3.      Also to encourage more members to become active at inter club level we hope to enter more competitions for our largest body of members Cat 3 + 4 and over 60’s.

 4.      By being more open and transparent in our team selections we hope this will allow players to understand and hopefully respect decisions and also encourage more members to play at inter club level.

 5.      Managers team sheets will be put up on January 1st and we hope to have enough managers that by the end of January we will know who our team managers are and they will then put up their team sheets.  Anyone who cannot get up to the club to put their name down can contact Danny Towell on 086 8170745 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for both managers or players.

 6.      We hope to start club practice days over 4 days e.g. 2 Sundays at the end of January played in a Four Ball /Better Ball club competition to give that competitive edge and 2 Sundays in February played in Foursome / Four Ball depending on which team you wish to represent.  By the 2 Sundays in February Team Managers will have an idea about pairings, these too will be special arranged club competitions with prizes. These days are open to change depending on the weather.  We will also have our usual practice day on Good Friday.  We do understand that it will not be possible to make all days.

 7.      When matches have been confirmed team managers will arrange away day practice rounds for the whole team to try and practice together to create team spirit and help with pairings.

 8.      Team managers will be in constant contact with all players leading up to matches at least 10 - 7 days in advance to organise practice and matches.

 9.      This will be a work-in-progress and not everything will work out but we will keep on trying to get things right and keep as many members as possible happy and involved and will always be open to suggestions.

 10.    Team manager will also be encouraged to try play with members they don’t know as to see them first hand and allowing all members the chance to make the teams.

 11.    Finally I would ask all members to be open and supportive to what we are trying to achieve and if we get everyone’s support,  I believe we will be more successful and create something special in our club.  We do understand that the inter club is a big commitment to all members but would be very grateful to any member who signs up for either manager or player.  It’s your club after all and you will enjoy it win or lose.

Thank you for taking the time to read this again and I hope to see you all soon.
